BEFORE YOU ORDER
Whole bean or ground coffee: which should you buy?
The trade-offs between whole bean and pre-ground coffee, what grind size means for your brewer, and when a hand grinder makes sense.
Every Counter Ritual coffee comes whole bean or ground, in the same 12 oz (340 g) box. The right choice depends on how you brew and whether you want to grind at home.
Why grind size matters
Water extracts flavor from the surface of the grounds. Finer grounds expose more surface and extract faster; coarser grounds extract more slowly. Each brewer has a range that works: coarse for French press and cold brew, medium for drip machines, medium-fine for most pour-over cones, and very fine for espresso.
Choose ground if…
Our ground coffee comes in one grind size, which cannot be changed, so it will not be ideal for every method. If you mostly use a French press, cold brew or espresso, whole bean gives you control.
- You do not have a grinder and want to brew straight from the box.
- You use a drip machine or a pour-over cone most days.
- You prefer one less step in the morning.
Choose whole bean if…
Ground coffee has much more exposed surface than whole beans, so many people find whole beans hold their character longer once the box is open. Grinding just before brewing is the usual recommendation.
- You own a grinder or plan to get one.
- You switch between brewers, such as pour-over on weekdays and French press on weekends.
- You like to adjust grind size to fine-tune the cup.
About our hand grinder
Our compact hand grinder needs no electricity and holds up to 36 g of beans at a time, enough for one or two cups. Its burr material and espresso capability are not confirmed, so it is best suited to drip, pour-over and French press. It ships separately from the coffee and checks out in its own order.
